FRANKFORT BEACH DAY

Whether you're looking for a relaxing day in the sand or an adrenaline rush with a surfboard, there's no better place to spend a day than Frankfort Beach. The best part isn't just the expansize views and sandy shores, it's what's around you. Hungry? Walk to a block or two for grub and brews. Got a bike? Killer trails are right around the corner. Want to stay put until the sun goes down? You can do that, too.

Take a day to hang on the beach. It's one of the best in northern Michigan not only for its beauty but its access to downtown hotspots—perfect for a whole day microadventure. Be sure to walk along the pier and check out the iconic lighthouse.

Frankfort is known as one of the best surfing spots in northern Michigan. Grab your board and catch a wave when the weather's right.

Spend the day in and around Frankfort, with lots of shopping and dining.

WHEN TO GO: Summer, anytime

HOW TO GET THERE:
An hour's drive from Traverse City. Take US-31 west toward, and then past Honor. In Benzonia, take a right on 115 and head west all the way to Frankfort. Once in Frankfort, head 2 blocks south to get on Main Street, which will take you all the way through town to the beach parking area (you can't miss it).

WHAT TO BRING: Drinking water, a cooler with food and snacks, sunscreen, blankets/towels, swimwear, kites, sand toys, surfboards, SUPs, kayaks.

OPTIONAL SIDE TREK: Take a drive north up M-22 to check out Point Betsie Lighthouse, or check out the more secluded beach in the neighboring town of Elberta.

KICK IT UP A NOTCH: Try your hand at surfing or kiteboarding to experience what this beach is truly all about, or bike along the Betsie Valley Trail. Rent a board or bike at the Beachnut Surf Shop in Frankfort and they'll get you where you need to go!

TIPS: Hungry? Walk to the plethora of food options in Frankfort, including local favorites like Stormcloud Brewing Company and grab a growler of libations to go.
